For her fifth portrait book, Amy Arbus borrows from modernists—Picasso, Cézanne, Munch, Schiele, Modigliani—translating their visceral energy into staged photographs. She painted costumes, props, and models to recreate the paintings' impact, yielding hybrid works that blur painting and photographic art. Chiaroscuro and lush color create trompe l'oeil portraits where live models seem to struggle to escape their two-dimensional confines.
